Simple, effective
I really like these shorts! Super simple, stretchy enough for mountain biking, quick drying, and (so far) durable. No bells or whistles, just simple reliable shorts that stay out of the way while in technical terrain.
Thigh pocket placement is fine, I don't usually use them often while riding, but they seem to keep pocket contents out of the way of pedaling.
I have a 36" waist - I might have been able to go to a large rather than XL, but the other dimensions are spot on. I run a belt currently and it works well.

Perfect commuting shorts
These shorts are exactly what I was looking for. Look and feel great on. They are an excellent slightly tapered fit and length, finishing just above the knees. I find them very comfy on and off the bike and are certainly versatile enough for other activities. Product construction is exactly what you expect from Gore.
