Technology Overview

GORE-TEX INFINIUM™

Created using an ultra-thin protective layer laminated to a lightweight textile, GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® products are totally windproof, yet extremely breathable.

The membrane technology in GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® products has billions of pores that are 900 times larger than water vapor molecules, so even though wind can’t get in, moisture from sweat vapor can easily get out.

Good fit and quality

After spending a lot of time looking around online for pants I could wear in the rain without getting wet, I was starting to give up. Most of what I found was either really unflattering (like the Patagonia Torrentshell pants) or too expensive (Arc'teryx Indisce pants, $400). Despite the measly two photos (?!) Gorewear provided for the R5 pants, I took a chance on them—and I've been pleasantly surprised. Fit: I'm 6'3", weigh about 185 lb, and am in fairly good shape. I typically buy slim pants (usually 33 × 32 in brands like Bonobos), so I bought a medium size. The waistband is comfortable and not too tight, the length goes to my ankles without being baggy, and—despite the description calling these “loose fitting” and “relaxed”—they're quite slim. I was able to fit a merino wool base layer under them, but wouldn't be able to fit actual pants under them. (For a fit comparison, they're similar to Public Rec's All Day Every Day joggers.) Style: As mentioned at the top, I think these look significantly better than the other water resistant options you'll find. That being said, the high polyester content gives them a little bit of a sheen and the knees are made out of a visibly different fabric, so I wouldn't go so far as to call these fashionable. Wind and water resistance: When I wore these pants outside on a breezy January evening in the San Francisco Bay Area (51ºF / 10.5ºC), they seemed to block all wind. While I haven't been able to try them in the rain yet, the water seemed to bounce off of them when I held the front of the pants under a running faucet. Pretty cool! It's worth noting, though, that Gore-Tex's Infinium tech is advertised as water resistant, not waterproof—so keep that in mind if you're hoping to keep 100% dry after hours in a downpour. I'm planning on wearing these for short runs and hikes, and it seems like these will do the trick. Other details: • There's a zipper pocket on the right upper leg that's big enough to hold an iPhone. The zipper is tucked into the fabric, which probably helps with water resistance, but it's not taped. • There's a smaller back pocket that you could fit a wallet in, but not much else. • There's a font and back reflective band on each leg, and the logo is also reflective. • The drawstring has rubber aglets to keep them from being pulled into the waistband, which is a nice touch.
